CHAPTER 13

SEEKING HELP AND ANSWERS

Saturday, February 9 — MD minus 76 days

ISRAEL’S USUALLY BLUNT Prime Minister was even more blunt than usual: “Senator, the survival of Israel is at substantial risk as we speak. America must understand that we will not be bullied or threatened, and we will not accept an attack on our soil. We will not accept a nuclear Iran or Syria and we have and will again strike preemptively to block the development of such a weapon by our enemies. We will use nuclear weapons defensively and preemptively to protect our nation. We intend to survive or take our enemies down with us, and that applies to Russia if they choose to join with our enemies. We have weapons that can reach their major cities. We will act alone if we must, and we will not allow even our friends to stand in the way of what must be done to protect ourselves from this threat.”

Senator Besserman sat quietly, waiting until Prime Minister Zimri had said all he wished to say. After some time, the Prime Minister indicated with a gesture that the floor was now his.

“Mr. Prime Minister, I believe you know that while President Strong is still in office, Israel will never have to act alone to protect its legitimate security needs. America remains your friend and ally, but America needs your help too. This is not simply a threat to Israel; it is a threat that flows to Israel only after America has been dealt a fatal blow which is intended to render it impossible for our nation to come to your aid. In that vacuum, Israel would be alone to face Iran and all the Arab nations it could gather and lead. Russia could move traitorously against Israel and America to fill the vacuum left when America is neutralized. In that reality, America’s defense against the planned terrorist attack is Israel’s first line of defense. To survive, we must face this threat together.”

“That will not be easy for your president with the opposition he faces from the majority party’s new peace initiative. In all my years in politics, living in a land surrounded by enemies, I have never had to face surrender masked as peace from an opposition party. Our people hate conflict and want to be at peace with our neighbors. However, they understand what is at stake. They know that hate cannot be ignored or eliminated by waving a white flag under the guise of a peace initiative. I have great respect for President Strong. His name mirrors his character. I know that he draws deeply from his faith, which I candidly do not understand, but I appreciate what it does for him. He will need strength and wisdom from his God in the coming days.

“Senator, do you understand what is planned for America? Have you an idea of how little time there is to stop the terrorists?”

“Mr. Prime Minister, I am here so that we share the information we both have so that we can coordinate a preemptive response in future.
